McCarthy Building Companies Inc. has completed construction of the new J. Craig Venter Institute, La Jolla.

The building is net-zero-energy facility. McCarthy said it represents the most ambitious sustainably designed biological research laboratory project ever built and is integral to the Venter Institute’s quest to perform the science needed to solve critical environmental and human health challenges. The facility has been built to earn LEED platinum certification.

The institute is on a 1.75-acre site at 4120 Torrey Pines Road on the University of California, San Diego campus. It was designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects.

The three-story, 45,000-square-foot building includes an expansive photovoltaic array and is intended to reflect its coastal location, with its long, slender shape.

The facility is designed to house 125 scientists and staff who will be focusing on genomic research.
