Weather Draws Conference of Climate Experts

The lack of frigid conditions locally — while more than 80 percent of the U.S. was covered in snow and ice in late January — might be one reason why organizers are holding the Climate Leadership Conference here Feb. 24-26 at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. More than 75 speakers, many experts in their fields, such as Mary Nichols, head of the California Air Resources Board, will address the conference, which is sponsored by the suburban Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. Other notables scheduled to appear include Mark Snell, president of San Diego-based Sempra Energy. … The University of California, San Diego has again been named near the top in the Peace Corps’ annual college ranking of volunteers, coming in at No. 12 among big schools sending graduates overseas. Fifty-four undergraduate alumni from UC San Diego are serving overseas in the Peace Corps, according to campus officials. … On Feb. 12, 65 staff members of the San Diego Diocese, including the Bishop, visited Father Joe’s Villages, which was originally part of the diocese when it was founded in 1950. The visit included presentations on various programs, including a question-and-answer segment with Father Joe. The village, in downtown’s East Village, serves 4,000 meals a day and helps more than 1,500 people in need. … The San Diego Radio Broadcasters Association, a local industry trade group with 27 member stations promoting radio as an advertising medium, is soliciting entries for its 16th annual Effective Advertising on Radio awards. Any radio commercial that aired here during 2013 and was written or produced locally is eligible. Entries are due Feb. 19. More details are available at sandiegoradio.com. … North County’s Tri-City Healthcare District is sponsoring the opening of the first of two Nifty After Fifty fitness centers for people 50 and older. The 8-year-old fitness centers, launched by gastroenterologist Sheldon Zinberg in Garden Grove, use fitness machines using air pressure instead of mechanical weights and pulleys, as well as offering other types of fitness programs for the baby boomer generation. The first center is scheduled to open Feb. 25 in Vista. A second will open in Oceanside later this year. … Also on the North County medical scene, practitioners at Palomar Medical Center are now able to track patients’ vital signs remotely thanks to the recent installation of a monitoring system developed by San Diego-based Sotera Wireless. The low-acuity patients wear wrist bands, which are part of the system that help providers watch for deteriorating vital signs. … Till next week.
