San Diego County lost one of its American Indian casinos with the recent closure of the Santa Ysabel Casino, on state Route 79 near the backcountry getaway of Julian.

The casino website said the venue was closed for business. A published report, which could not be immediately confirmed, said the enterprise was in debt.

Santa Ysabel likely fell victim to the competitive environment. Many casinos vie for the gambler’s dollar. There are still eight casinos within San Diego County, with most offering upward of 2,000 slot machines. Riverside County also has a thriving American Indian casino business, including several very large venues.
