Doucette, who leads Procopio’s corporate and securities practice group, has been on the ACG’s board for five years and has chaired its programs committee for the past 18 months. He practices in mergers and acquisitions, corporate, securities and venture financing. His mergers-and-acquisitions experience includes representing buyers and sellers in mergers, stock and asset purchases, management buyouts and related transactions. “Dennis’ background, experience and deep market knowledge make him an ideal leader for ACG San Diego,” said ACG Past President Keith McKenzie of Delphi Private Advisors.

William Small and John Schena have formed Small & Schena LLP. The firm’s practice will focus on business litigation, intellectual property and professional liability, as well as other areas of civil litigation. Alexis Gutierrez, a partner at Higgs Fletcher & Mack is helping another nonprofit. He has been named to United Way of San Diego County’s board of directors. The organization has been one of the most recognized community leaders in tackling education, financial self-sufficiency, health and homelessness, and holds a four-star rating on Charity Navigator. In full disclosure, I have served on the board and worked with Gutierrez. He’s awesome and is no stranger to volunteer activities, having served on the boards for the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties, where he was its chairman from 2009 to 2010. He was also a member of the San Diego Convention Center Corp.’s board and served as chairman. Gutierrez’s legal practice emphasizes business and employment counseling as well as complex commercial litigation for various organizations.

“We continue to help business, government, nonprofit organizations and diverse communities come together to solve complex problems for the long term, and Alexis, along with the rest of our distinguished board, help us do just that,” said Kevin Crawford, president and CEO of United Way.

Patrick Monroe has joined Best Best & Krieger LLP as of counsel. Monroe brings more than 15 years of legal and business experience. Before obtaining his law degree, Monroe spent several years in business management, which enables him “to provide clients with a unique understanding of their business needs,” said Arlene Prater, managing partner. Monroe provides legal services to privately owned businesses and nonprofits, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, corporate transactions and intra-company dispute resolution.

The underfunding of the San Diego Superior Court, like those around the state, continues, despite a glimmer of hope from the current budget. In fact, San Diego’s courts are now looking at a significant deficit. Because of the two-year funding formula, declining filings, doubling the reallocation of historical funding slated to occur next year, and unfunded local cost increases, it is possible that the existing deficit will increase substantially over the next year. We are fortunate to have great leadership in the local courts, but they need us to advocate for them. The real impact of the budget passed recently by the Legislature is that the courts will need to make further cuts in services to stay within the approved budget. The San Diego Superior Court administration is looking at how to address this deficit without further compromising services and access to justice for San Diegans. So like you, the San Diego County Bar Association’s court funding action committee will continue to bring the real-world impacts of the budget deficit to light and educate our elected officials and the San Diego community at large about the issues related to our funding gap. Talk to your state representative.

Crosbie Gliner Schiffman Southard & Swanson LLP recently hired Gregory Markow as a partner to lead the firm’s new litigation practice. The barely 1-year-old firm also hired a second lawyer, Van Nguyen, who will expand the firm’s transactional practice, particularly with respect to energy-related real estate projects. With these additions, CGS3 has 10 lawyers and two paralegals. Markow has more than 20 years of experience representing real estate investors and owners looking to minimize risks that lead to litigation, and he has devoted his career to resolving real estate and business disputes. Nguyen’s experience includes representing clients in acquisitions, dispositions, developments and financings of complex commercial real estate projects. She specializes in energy and hospitality projects — including solar, wind, gas and geothermal projects — and gaming and hotel developments.
