Cardiff-based Raken Raking In Kudos for Latest Mobile App

Here’s another information technology success story with that unique San Diego twist. Friends who grew up with Kyle Slager in Ohio have two reasons to be jealous of the Buckeye native. As founder and CEO of Cardiff-by-the-Sea startup Raken Inc., Slager works out of a beachfront office that would be the envy of many a Midwesterner, not to mention quite a few of us who live locally. And Slager’s working environment has been good for business, the second reason for a little jealously among old buddies. He’s been receiving kudos right and left, most recently being tabbed as one of 30 COOL Companies exhibiting wares at the recent San Diego Venture Group’s yearly venture summit. Raken markets software that automates the laborious task of reporting of each day’s activities at construction sites via a mobile app. In February, while still in beta, Raken was named the No. 1 daily reporting software for general contractors at the American General Contractors’ national convention. And in mid-April, Slager and his team officially launched Raken, signing such high-profile customers as Swinerton Inc. and Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., along with homebuilders Hill Construction Co. and DD Ford Construction. … Traditional grocers have given ground the past few years to natural and organic food store brands such as Whole Foods Market Inc., Sprouts Farmers Market Inc. and Trader Joe’s. And the trend continues unabated. Point Loma-based neighborhood food store Baron’s Market will open its fifth outlet in Alpine on Aug. 19. Vista-based organic food retailer Frazier Farms is opening a second store on Oceanside Boulevard in Oceanside, where independent organic and natural food purveyor Earthgrown Market used to be. The latter moved to a new location on El Camino further east. … Longtime Encinitas civic leader Alice Jacobson, who recently chaired the city’s environmental commission and was a longtime member of the planning commission, bought the monthly Seaside Courier from Jim Madaffer, publisher of Mission Publishing Group. Details were not disclosed. … Finally. The second annual La Costa Film Festival is now scheduled for Sept 18-21 at the Carlsbad resort of the same name plus a nearby movie house and the Dove Library Auditorium. This year’s festival will feature commercial films, documentaries and shorts with a sports theme, organizers said. New York City’s Mandalay Sports Media has been tabbed to help with the film selection as well as help round up some celebrity appearances. The list of films to be shown will be announced Sept. 1.
