It’s ‘The End’ For Sony’s E-Book Efforts

Sadly, the news media is reporting the end of an era that has an impact on San Diego. Sony Electronics is closing its E-reader business which was orchestrated from its North American headquarters in Rancho Bernardo. The Japanese consumer electronics giant was one of the first to jump into e-readers with its patented E-ink technology years ago, even ahead of Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook. To be sure, some observers say the failure to survive in the fiercely competitive market was more due to the popularity of tablets, such as the Apple iPad, than dedicated electronic reading devices. Sony users can now download content from the website of former rival Kobo … I’ll drink to that. Escondido’s Stone Brewing Co. introduces an unusual brew, Milk Stout, a 4.2 percent alcohol-by-volume beverage that is brewed with lactose and whole coffee beans. A news release said San Diego-based artisanal roaster Ryan Bros. Coffee is supplying the beans for the product, which will be available for the rest of the summer and this fall. Brewer Brian Gallagher, who works at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Liberty Station, came up with the recipe. … Worth noting: Indian Motorcycle of El Cajon is showcasing two new rides, the Scout and Roadmaster, for the 2105 model year. The brand has become popular since its purchase by recreational vehicle maker Polaris Industries a few years back. … It was only a matter of time. Fido to go, a food truck catering to canines, made its first appearance Aug. 9 at the Dog Days of Summer Canine Festival held annually at Cardiff-by-the Sea. The truck sells gluten and allergen-free canine cookies and doggy ice creams and frozen yogurts, according to franchisee owner Steffany August, a police officer turned entrepreneur. The rolling food truck for the four-legged set got its start in Chicago in 2011. … Well, we all know San Diego is a mecca for the physically fit, as well as those residents who are beauty conscious. RealSelf — a website all about cosmetic surgery and other medical procedures — has confirmed San Diego’s place in the sun, so to speak. America’s cul-de-sac comes in at No. 8 on a list of the top ten cities in the country for access to such services as dermatologists, as well as other factors such as not smoking, stress and fitness levels. San Francisco came in at No. 1. Seattle at No. 10. … And just in case you missed it, El Milagro in Rancho Santa Fe, owned by sports gambler Billy Walters goes on the auction block Aug. 15 with no reserve. Previously, Walters had listed the property, featuring 21,000 square feet set on a 9-acre lot, at just under $20 million. He brought in New York City-based Concierge Auctions to handle the bidding. Till next week.
