An employee of Science Applications International Corp. died April 28 in San Diego Bay off Naval Air Station North Island during a nighttime U.S. Navy training exercise, according to representatives of the defense contractor and the Navy command that holds the contract.

SAIC (NYSE: SAIC) identified the employee as Coll Perske, 29, who worked in the marine mammal program at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific. Perske had been working in the program for more than five years.

For decades, the Navy has used dolphins and sea lions for help in locating underwater mines. The Navy and SAIC offered few details about the exercise during which Perske died.
