Petco Animal Supplies Inc. plans to establish a new headquarters and support center in Rancho Bernardo, as the San Diego-based retailer consolidates operations currently located at sites in Miramar and Scripps Ranch.

Company officials said the 300,000-square-foot facility, to be built at 10850 Via Frontera, will be home to more than 650 relocated employees after its completion in fall 2015. The privately held Petco is remodeling an existing building that it recently purchased, but did not disclose expected project costs.

The new San Diego support center will work in tandem with the company’s existing support center in San Antonio, Texas, said CEO Jim Myers.

“San Diego has been our home for decades; this community has helped us grow and this new facility gives us the opportunity for continued growth in our hometown,” Myers said in a statement.

Officials said interior construction and extensive remodeling of the Rancho Bernardo building will begin this fall. The company plans to “invest substantially” in creating an open and sustainable work environment.

The new site will have “very few closed-door offices” to foster a collaborative work environment. There will be employee wellness facilities and pet friendly amenities, including pet play areas, officials said.

Petco operates more than 1,300 locations in the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico, including retail stores and nine Pooch Hotel pet daycare centers. It also supports animal welfare causes through its nonprofit Petco Foundation.

The company is in the midst of a multi-year naming rights deal at Petco Park in East Village, home to Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres.
