They’re Back: 33 Million Tourists Visit S.D. in 2013

The number of visitors to this region surpassed 33 million in 2103, the San Diego Tourism Authority reported, reversing a downward trend over the past three years due to the recession. That accounted for $18.7 billion in economic activity for the year, which generated $410 million in tax revenue for local governments, Tourism Authority President Joe Terzi said. … Workers in San Diego’s private security industry have become the latest labor group to begin organizing and calling for higher wages. While guards in San Diego report wages as low as $9 an hour, with few benefits, including health care, their unionized counterparts in Los Angeles and San Francisco earn at least $12.55 an hour, with health care coverage and other benefits. A group of guards, led by SEIU United Service Workers West, held a news conference to say that private guards in the region could inject an added $244 million into our economy if they were paid more. … San Diego-based auctioneer of Cal Auctions & Estates Sales is teaming with St. Vincent de Paul Village of San Diego to stage an online auction April 8, another in a series of auctions featuring antiques, fine art, sports memorabilia, jewelry, gold and silver donated to the nonprofit. For the second year in a row, Professional Woman’s Magazine — as part of its 2014 Best of the Best Lists — ranks SDSU’s College of Business Administration as having one of the top MBA programs in the U.S. That follows recognition by Bloomberg, Businessweek, Forbes, Military Times and U.S. News & World Report, which over the past six months have similarly named the business school as having one of the nation’s top MBA programs. Professional Woman’s Magazine also listed SDSU among the top colleges and universities in the county, the only local university to be honored in both categories. It was the second year in a row that the campus made the list. The Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego also made the magazine’s top MBA program list. … And this North County item of note. Sempra Energy has teamed with Habitat for Humanity to build 11 new homes on a parcel on Elm Street in Escondido. Sempra is sponsoring construction of one of the homes, which will be offered to a wounded veteran and family. Sempra is contributing $200,000 into the effort, and Sempra volunteers will work round-the-clock June 2-6, along with workers from Habitat, to build the new homes. Till next week.
