San Diego-Based Triton Algae Innovations Ltd. has received $5 million in Series A funding to study and commercialize its algae-based dietary supplements.

Triton, a spinoff of biofuel company Sapphire Energy Inc., said that its PhycoShield product uses genetically modified algae to help the stomach defend against viruses and bacteria.

The funding comes from Gilbert, Ariz.-based Heliae Technology Holdings Inc., a company focusing on finding ways to use farmed algae for animal feed, fuels, chemicals, medicines and cosmetics.
