This Lecture Is A Life-Changing Experience

What is life? One famous San Diegan might have the answer, if you attend his upcoming book party. J. Craig Venter, the scientist who first sequenced the human genome, will be on the University of California, San Diego campus Oct. 28 to promote his new book “Life at the Speed of Life: From the Double Helix to the Dawn of Digital Life.” The nonfiction treatise examines how synthetic genomics is going to help create new forms of life. The UCSD Extension is sponsoring the gathering as part of its on-going Helen Edison Lecture Series. Admission is free. Venter is a graduate of UC San Diego, by the way, one of its most famous alums. … The San Diego Venture Group’s 2013 annual Pitchfest competition is getting underway. The nonprofit group, with the help of local angel investors as judges, is ferreting out 10 startups from dozens of applications, which will be whittled down to three. Representatives from those three companies will make pitches before a live audience of 400-plus Dec. 12, with a $25,000 prize and other goodies at stake. It’s great fun, and it gives those interested a chance to get at a look at some early front-runners in the entrepreneurial world. You might recognize the names of past winners that have since received nice funding rounds or been acquired, such as ecoATM, Takelessons.com and SwoopThat/Hub.edu. Visit sdvg.org for details. …Just in time for Halloween: San Diego ranks as the 12th-best city in the country for trick-or-treating this Oct. 31, according to residential real estate website Zillow. San Francisco ranks No. 1, while Boston ranks No. 2. The site also lists San Diego’s Kensington district as the best neighborhood for scoring candy, with Carmel Valley coming in second. Loma Portal was No. 3, while Del Mar Heights and Mission Hills rounded out the top five. … On Oct. 25, San Diego-based Petco officially re-opened the 10 stores in the county acquired from PetPeople in 2012 and rebranded them as Unleashed by Petco stores. … Finally. The Defense Commissary Agency started a year-long trial of its version of a big-box discount store on Oct. 24 at Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach. The newly renamed Commissary Plus pilot store is dedicating much of its floor space to big-box store items. The agency will evaluate customer response during the test period to determine whether to continue offering products in larger sizes and multiple packages, a spokesman said. Till next week.
