Study Estimates SDCC’s Economic Impact in Billions

The San Diego Community College District’s three campuses generate $4 billion in overall activity, which accounts for 2.3 percent of the region’s economy, according to the district’s recently released economic impact study. The district pumps $329 million annually directly into the economy through payroll and other operations. … For the fourth year in a row, anti-air pollution authorities in Sacramento selected San Diego’s California Center for Sustainable Energy to administer a statewide program promoting the purchase or lease of electric and hybrid cars. The Air Resources Board allots $59.6 million for buyer subsidies, according to a news release. Since 2010, the center says it has handed out more than $60 million in rebates ranging in amounts from $900 to $2,500 to buyers of 33,000 vehicles. … During the week of Sept. 30, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Jerry Sanders led a delegation of 100 business and political leaders on an annual advocacy odyssey to the nation’s capital. Participants met with various elected and appointed officials on issues including cross-border commerce, immigration, and water and energy reliability, a chamber official said. Public officials on the trip included San Diego interim Mayor Todd Gloria. U.S. Rep. Scott Peters, D-Calif., led the group on a tour of the Capitol building. … Escondido-based craft beer maker Stone Brewing Co. joins the growing list of new food and drink purveyors opening outlets in the newly expanded Terminal 2 at Lindbergh Field. The brewer opens a 2,500-square-foot outlet that seats 120. The restaurant also sells fresh food from the company’s Stone Farms unit in the theme of keeping it local … Despite another tough season for the Padres, the team’s TV ratings were 30 percent higher than last season, Fox Sports San Diego reported recently. Fox also said it sold out its commercial inventory for the season, according to a Fox spokesman … Worth a mention: The 7-year-old, 18,000-square-foot Victory Gymnastics Academy in Kearny Mesa, the largest privately owned facility of its kind in the region, is woman-owned. Former residential real estate professional Shawna Meyer opened the gym after finding a shortage of venues for her two daughters to practice. More than 600 students a week attend its classes. … Finally, this tip for after hours: “The Last Goodbye,” a musical retelling of Shakespeare’s tragic romance “Romeo and Juliet,” continues at The Old Globe through Nov. 3.
