Three Still Vying To Be the Last Startup Standing

The three finalists in San Diego Venture Group’s annual PitchFest have been selected from a list of more than 90 contestants: student housing search service OnMyBlock, “focused ultrasound” medical device startup Sonrgy Inc. and trust fund service provider TrustEgg. The winner of the $25,000 prize will be named during a Dec. 12 dinner, which more than 400 entrepreneurs and supporters are expected to attend. Details are at sdvg.org. …. Over the past decade, ridership on the Pacific Surfliner between San Luis Obispo and San Diego, the second-busiest rail corridor in the nation, and on the San Joaquin Valley rail line, fifth busiest, increased by 1 million passengers, and ticket revenues skyrocketed from $44 million to $102 million, according to the news from Caltrans. The state transportation agency provides funding to three rail corridors in the state, including the one here, one in the Central Valley and one from the Bay Area to Sacramento. Over the years, the agency said it has made $1 billion in capital improvements regionally and increased the number of daily trains to 11 from three. … Carlsbad-based corporate health fitness business Sonic Boom Wellness reports that a record 43 companies and 4,239 individuals nationwide finished their workouts in the recent 30-day Ultimate Fitness Challenge. Bay Area-based Super Store Industries won top prize, with its employees climbing more than 12 million steps during 240,000 minutes of intense activity, Sonic co-founders Danna Korn and Bryan Van Noy said. The two said they will make donations to the winner’s charity of choice for winning the race, so to speak. … Coronado business consultant Randall Kendis said he has invented and is selling an extremely lightweight camera “tripod” that attaches to the visor of a baseball cap and enables live streaming via a smartphone or other device. Kendis said his “Streamaroo” can transform any event into an instant memory-making videocast using such services as Skype and Facetime. More info is at streamaroo.com. … Finally: Youth performing arts nonprofit All About Music San Diego scheduled a holiday concert for Dec. 8 at the Sherwood Auditorium in La Jolla. High school students from the region will perform music by Bach, Corelli, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi, as well as holiday carols, under the direction of Mary Gerard. Klezmer clarinetist Robert Zelickman will solo with the orchestra with two traditional works “Happy Nigun” and “2nd Avenue Freilach.” The group will also perform on Dec. 24.
