PitchFest Top 10 To Make Startups A Spectator Sport

The San Diego Venture Group released the names of the 10 startups that will battle for $25,000 in cash at its annual PitchFest set for Dec. 12 in La Jolla. The semifinalists were chosen from more than 90 applications. They are BidTru; Curvo Labs; Nasseo; OnMyBlock; Pangea Pal; Precision Information, publisher of the Educated Investor; Raynforest; Sonrgy; TrustEgg; and Zenhavior. Tom Tullie, CEO of ecoAtm, Tony Darugar, CEO of Xpenser, and Tom Rollins, a top executive at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, will talk about their successful mergers with larger companies when the SDVG holds its next breakfast meeting Nov. 21. Details and tickets are at sdvg.org. … Josh Roach, who wrote the popular mobile banking deposit app for smartphones and tablets, said his latest startup, San Diego-based Mobile Learning Networks, landed $350,000 in seed funding. The new app enables tutoring sessions that are just as effective as face-to-face lessons, Roach said. The Apple Store will offer the app starting in December. … Industry trade publication Becker’s Hospital Review awards Escondido’s towering Palomar Medical Center the distinction of being one of the nation’s 50 greenest hospitals, the only one in Southern California to make the list. … Bloomberg Businessweek releases its annual ranking of the top MBA programs in the nation, and it includes the University of San Diego’s part-time program at No. 17. … Underground Elephant, a technologically adept marketing agency headquartered downtown, will donate 2,500 pounds of turkey to Feeding America San Diego’s food bank Nov. 15. … A team of employees representing Carlsbad-based Prava Construction Services ranks first in fitness as measured by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce in its second annual Get Fit 30-day challenge. The team logged more than 29,000 minutes of sweat-generating activity through the 30-day period ended Oct. 30. Kaiser Permanente co-sponsors the challenge, which featured 140 teams this year. … Finally, the Bach Collegium San Diego, which presents the Dublin version of Handel’s “Messiah” Dec. 8-9, makes its New York City debut Dec. 14 with a performance of Christmas Vespers featuring the music of Michael Praetorius.
