Country Music Star Shares Life Story to Promote Foster Care

Walden Family Services, a nonprofit foster care and adoption agency, recently held its 10th annual Wine D’Vine Gala fundraising event, which raised nearly $300K to further the organization’s mission of providing care and support to foster children and families. This year’s event was held at the Grand Del Mar. County music star Jimmy Wayne provided entertainment and an inspirational speech. A former foster youth and homeless teen, Wayne met with Walden’s foster youth before the event to offer his advice and support. During the event, he shared his life story and stressed the importance of organizations like Walden Family Services.

The Mountain Shadows Foundation just completed its 21st annual golf tournament at Santa Luz Country Club, where it raised $75,000 to support the programs for residents with developmental disabilities, giving them an independent lifestyle. Mountain Shadows Community Homes has 30 group homes in Escondido, San Marcos, Riverside and San Bernardino serving more than 189 residents. Each home is designed to foster a family environment to encourage the growth and independence of the residents.

Community HousingWorks, a nonprofit developer and owner of affordable rental communities across San Diego County, provided Escondido residents a renovated organic community garden thanks to many generous donors. Thanks to the generosity of San Diego County, private foundations and corporate sponsors, the HousingWorks’ Avocado Court rental community’s organic garden will now be open to the public and residents will have the capacity to serve more than 100 people with 34 garden plots.

The Challenged Athletes Foundation 20th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge numbers are in — the Foundation raised $1.2 million to support challenged athletes. About 300 challenged athletes and more than 200 able-bodies athletes participated in the Triathlon Challenge. Also, more than 175 cyclists participated in the 24 Hour Fitness Tour de Cove cycle marathon to raise another $79,000. The money will provide grants for adaptive sports equipment, training and competition expenses so challenged athletes can live active lifestyles and participate in sports.

Senior Community Centers has launched its first Fill A Plate campaign to raise critical funds to end senior hunger in San Diego. Senior Community Centers serves 2,100 meals a day at 10 dining sites and to homebound clients in neighborhoods across the city. The nutrition program addresses hunger and food insecurity to meet the specialized needs of thousands of low-income seniors in San Diego County. Senior Community Centers’ Fill A Plate campaign asks restaurants and bars around San Diego County to donate a percentage of sales on a designated day or sales period to the agency’s nutrition program. Project Homeless Connect is calling for your help. Interim Mayor Todd Gloria urged local residents to clean out their closets, buy needed items and volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of homeless San Diegans at The Eighth Project Homeless Connect – Downtown San Diego.
