Catering Company Readies for Role At Winter Games

Here’s a local angle to the upcoming Winter Games. Behind the Scenes Catering, a Sorrento Valley-Mira Mesa-based catering firm, will be cooking meals for 5,000-plus members of the U.S. broadcast and international media, as well as corporate sponsors and athletes, at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, come February and March. It’s a gigantic undertaking. A spokeswoman said the company is shipping all necessary products, including equipment and food, to the site, located 1,000 miles south of Moscow. The spokeswoman said the effort would be like taking 5,000 people camping for two months in the wilderness and cooking all their meals during that time. Workers have packed 50 containers of products and equipment and are fine-tuning the gigantic grocery list for 12,000 meals a day to be prepared. … StartupCircle’s Gabriela Dow reports that the first group of six entrepreneurs participating in the most recent San Diego Startup Camp in Silicon Valley has raised more than $2.5 million in funding. Meanwhile, the camp hosts a pitch fest Dec. 3 for the next batch of companies that will participate in a second camp starting in early 2014. The winning entrepreneurs receive $25,000 plus mentoring and guidance to get running. The Sunnyvale-based network of Plug and Play Tech Center startups have raised over $1.6 billion in funding, more than $350 million in 2011 alone. More details at plugandplaycenter.com. … And speaking of things entrepreneurial, the La Jolla Playhouse hosts its annual Innovation Night on Nov. 20 at the University of California, San Diego campus. The night’s networking event features Qualcomm Inc. General Counsel Don Rosenberg, Pharmatek Labs President Tim Scott, and Forward Ventures Managing Partner Ivor Royston as co-chairs. The gathering this year honors the late Duane Roth, who was CEO of Connect. Details and ticket information are available at lajollaplayhouse.org/innovation-night. … On Nov. 15, the 40 workers at information technology firm The Control Group are preparing to make 15 prosthetic hands from kits for just a few of the 300,000 amputees who have lost limbs due to landmines in war zones around the world. The company is coordinating the volunteer effort with Odyssey Teams’ Helping Hands program and LN-4 Prosthetic Hand Foundation. A news release said such devices can cost $3,000 to $70,000, far too expensive for most amputees. … Finally. Local brand agency MiresBall comes up with the name “Kevo” for a new mobile app offered by Kwikset that is in essence an “e-key” instead of a physical door lock. Firm partner Scott Mires said the name combines “key,” “go” and “revolution.” Seeya!
