Website Brings Accredited Investors, Startups Together

Startups in need of angel funding have a new source to possibly tap here in San Diego. Michael J. Kinkelaar, senior partner in the downtown office of Procopio Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch, has been working with Orange County investment bank Roth Capital Partners plus member organizations Connect and Orange County’s Octane to launch a new website, openround.com. Kinkelaar said the site, which is actually a subsidiary of Roth, matches accredited investors (those who can afford to risk large sums of cash in investments) with fund-hungry startups. Kinkelaar said that one of the first entrepreneurs to sign up for funding is Jon Carder, CEO of online loyalty awards program provider Mogl here in San Diego. Carder likes the new source even though he has already raised $15 million in venture capital. … Come Nov. 13 on the University of California, San Diego campus, the outpost of the MIT Enterprise Forum San Diego hosts a panel of three “Techstars” grads to discuss how they are growing their businesses. Slated to appear are Al Bsharah, CEO of Embarke, an email optimization platform; Bach Le, co-founder of Shopventory, an inventory management platform integrated with mobile payment solutions such as Square; and Phil Black, CEO of FitDeck, which has developed a series of exercise playing cards for those who want to get and stay fit. Navigate on over to sdmitforum.org for details. …While workers were lifting the last piece of steel into place for the new UCSD Jacobs Medical Center, Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said someone had anonymously donated $25 million as a challenge gift. For every dollar the campus raises, the donor will give a dollar to the effort … Retired Coast Guard ward officer and former manager at General Atomics’ Radar Systems Group Jerry Martin and his wife open a Wild Birds Unlimited franchise on Scripps Poway Parkway in San Diego. The couple plans a grand opening Nov. 9-10. … A military promotion worth noting: The Navy names 20-year veteran Capt. Scott L. Johnston as its top specialty leader for psychology. Johnston directs the Naval Center for Combat & Operational Stress Control, which, among many missions, aids research and promotes best practices in the treatment of combat and operational stress injuries. Till next week.
