San Diego biotech Nucelis Inc. held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for its new fermentation plant.

The company is a spinoff of San Diego agriculture genetics company Cibus Inc., which employs 70.

Nucelis now employs 20 in its new fermentation plant and will continue to expand, the company said. It will develop a compound called squalene, typically derived from shark livers or as a byproduct of olive oil processing, and has a variety of uses in the cosmetic, nutritional and lubricants markets, the company said.
