Promenade Construction to Begin at North EmbarcaderoFriday, May 17, 2013
Port district and city officials are marking what is deemed a significant milestone for the $28 million first phase of renovations to the North Embarcadero area in downtown San Diego.
According to a statement from the Port of San Diego, North Harbor Drive traffic lanes on May 20 will be moved approximately 60 feet to the east between the Navy and B Street Piers, so that construction of a 105-foot-wide waterfront promenade can begin. The change will be marked in a public ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m.
When complete, the promenade will include formal gardens, plazas and pathways. There will also be two structures for ticket kiosks, a café, a new public restroom and a visitor information center.
Construction on the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Phase I project began in early 2012, geared to beautifying North Harbor Drive between the two piers, as well as the stretch of West Broadway between Pacific Highway and North Harbor Drive.
Improved roadways, landscaping and public gathering spaces are also included in the first-phase project, expected to be completed in spring 2014.
