Railroad Line Enters Inspection Agreement, Prepares to Increase Freight Transport

Pacific Imperial Railroad Inc., the operator of the Desert Line that serves the Tijuana-Tecate region of Baja Mexico and eastern San Diego County, said it entered into a services agreement with JL Patterson & Associates Inc., an Orange, Calif. engineering and construction management firm, to inspect the railroad’s 57 bridges and 17 tunnels.

Additionally, JL Patterson will provide oversight during the test train operations in compliance with Pacific Imperial’s agreement with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System.

The company said after the inspections are completed, it will begin reconstruction on the line to allow for transportation of freight from maquiladoras in Mexico.

The Desert Line, with 130 miles of track, is the only rail line that runs near about 755 maquiladoras in Baja California, the company said.
