Right Ingredients Come Together to Support Military Families

Phil’s BBQ and Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County raised more than $77,000 at the 5th Annual Phil’s Big BBQ at the Ballpark recently. Phil’s BBQ donated 100 percent of the proceeds to Operation Bigs, a mentoring program for children with a deployable parent in the military. More than 3,100 guests attended the event, which featured Phil’s chicken and ribs, ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s Seaport Village, ICEEs, a Kid Ventures Kids Zone, a Karl Strauss beer garden and a VIP area. Sponsors included Torrey Pines Bank, The Padres Foundation and Frank Motors Group. More than 100 Phil’s employees donated their time and efforts to set up and run the event … The San Diego Foundation awarded $200,000 to local artists as part of the 2013 Creative Catalyst Fund — Individual Artist Fellowship Program (CCF). Each of the 10 artists was awarded $20,000 to help advance their professional careers. The CCF program works to support the creation and development of new art pieces by San Diego-based artists. “The CCF enables the creation of new work which is artistically innovative in terms of the artist’s own practice, and/or discipline,” said Felicia Shaw, arts and culture director at the San Diego Foundation. “Our goal is to create job opportunities for San Diego artists and to establish our region as a place where creativity and all makers of art can thrive.” Awardees include local filmmaker Neil Kendricks; jazz musician Charles McPherson; instrumentalist Wu Man; visual artist Eva Struble; digital media artist Andrew Bracken; installation artist Jamex de la Torre; mixed media artist Miki Iwasaki; puppet theater artists Iain Gunn and Bridget Rountree; and video artist Cy Kuckenbaker … Celgene Corp. raised $8,500 at the company’s Baskets and Beverages event. The funds will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk, to be held in November. “Our 2013 fundraising goal is $25,000 and this event put us off to a good start. We’re grateful to all the companies that donated items, employees that created baskets and appreciate all our supporters that helped us collect thousands of dollars for this worthy cause,” said Patty Waymire, executive assistant at Celgene Corp. in San Diego. “We still have our work cut out for us and appreciate any additional financial assistance we can get as we not only work to reach our goal, but surpass it.” The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk will be held Nov. 8 at Petco Park where teams and individual walkers will join together holding illuminated balloons to help raise awareness for the cause … Local organization Home Start received a $10,000 grant from the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation. The funds will be used to support Home Start’s Financial Opportunity Center located in the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation … The San Marcos Community Foundation awarded $3,000 in grants to two local organizations. The Alzheimer’s Association received $1,500, which will be used to help cover the cost of producing informational packets about the organization’s services. Words Alive received $1,500, which will be used to purchase curriculum for the organization’s Adolescent Book Group.
