East County Hosts St. Patty’s Day Race

A number of East County businesses are teaming up to hold a half marathon and 5K footrace on March 17, an idea originally sparked by the 2012 leadership class of the East County Chamber of Commerce. The race through parts of El Cajon and Rancho San Diego will give runners a whirlwind tour of the two communities, organizers said. They also said they hope that the event, “RunEC,” becomes the first in a series to draw athletes and their supporters as part of an effort to benefit the overall economy of East County. Work crews have dismantled that landmark 45,000-square-foot burgundy tent at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which had become a fixture since the owner of the failed “Valitar” horse extravaganza filed for bankruptcy late last year. The tent was sold at auction recently for $85,000 and the buyer was given 10 days to dismantle and haul it away. Fairground officials said the tent, with a complex steel understructure, cost $1.3 million to build … The San Diego Air & Space Museum celebrates the 50th anniversary with the release of a new guidebook, “Celebrating: a History of the Museum and its Collections,” plus the holding of a number of public activities. The museum is one of the four largest similar attractions in the country and home to the third largest aviation archives and library. Plus, it houses a collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft, including a working replica of Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis and the original Apollo 9 Command Module spacecraft. Details at cafemerlot.com … Finally … The San Diego office of Turner Construction Co. hosted a four-day series of classes for construction management to the benefit of local military veterans. Executives said the office here is the only one nationwide to host three sessions of the school per year, which are popular among recent military personnel who want to succeed in the construction industry as civilians. The recent gathering included participation from the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, which promotes inclusion of small business as subcontractors in all of its public works projects. Turner, the largest general contractor in the U.S., is building the city’s new downtown central library and working a big piece of the $2 billion Lindbergh Field airport expansion.
