ViaSat Inc., the Carlsbad maker of satellite equipment, said it was awarded a follow-on contract for $1.65 million from the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command to continue working on security systems for off-the-shelf mobile devices.

Under the terms of the new contract, ViaSat will first develop a prototype trusted smartphone and then a production-ready version. The item is expected to be completed by spring with the new secure mobile system available on any Android device this summer, the company said.

ViaSat said it is working on a number of projects to deliver a secure mobile enterprise system that can connect commercially available devices with a variety of wireless carrier networks. While the development is aimed at military personnel, the system is designed to provide secure communication of sensitive information for any government or commercial customer, the company said.
