Efforts at Empowerment Earn a Place in Women’s Hall of Fame

Betty Evans Boone will be inducted into the San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame on March 16. Boone is being recognized in the category of “Empowerer of Women and Girls” for her trailblazing efforts in her own legal career, and her work in the community on behalf of Lawyers Club, which works to advance the status of women in law and society.

Donna Jones was recently named the chair of Civic San Diego, formerly Centre City Development Corp. and Southeastern Economic Development Corp. Civic San Diego is a nonprofit public benefit corporation wholly owned by the City of San Diego with the mission of managing public improvements and public-private partnership projects, now that the state killed the city’s former Redevelopment Agency. Jones, a partner at Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLP, practices in land-use, and she specializes in working with environmental consultants to ensure California Environmental Quality Act compliance has been achieved. In other words, she has learned what it’s like to be a saint.

The 12th Annual Black & White Ball will be held March 2, in the Elizabeth Ballroom of the Manchester Grand Hyatt. This is a great event, put on by the San Diego Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), and I am not even talking about the desserts crafted in the name of one of the sponsoring firms, Morrison & Foerster, last year. The formal affair is an opportunity for in-house counsel and the firms that support them to socialize with one another while raising money in support of a deserving local charity. Girls on the Run is the beneficiary of the event. The nonprofit organization is a youth development program that combines an interactive curriculum with running to inspire self-respect and healthy choices in preteen girls, providing them with tools to avoid risky adolescent behaviors. The local ACC has more than 600 members, and Jon Hellings is the executive director.

Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP recently added three attorneys to its San Diego offices. Amy S. Cannon joins the firm as Of Counsel, while Michael R. Kiesling joins as Senior Counsel, and Ryan M. Dietz joins as an associate.

Cannon’s practice will focus on real estate transactions, including real property purchase and sale, commercial leasing, easements and licenses, financing and related business matters. Cannon’s clients have included owners and developers of shopping centers, commercial and industrial office buildings and residential subdivisions, commercial tenants, property managers, real estate investment companies, banking institutions, and automobile manufacturers and dealership owners. While attending law school, Cannon clerked for The Honorable Stanwood R. Duval Jr. at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. After graduating, Cannon was an associate at Latham & Watkins and then at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton. Kiesling has a broad-based real estate and commercial litigation practice, assisting developers, landowners, contractors, lenders, and commercial tenants in achieving creative and cost-effective solutions to complex real estate and commercial disputes. Prior to joining Procopio, Kiesling practiced at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP (formerly Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP) in San Diego. Kiesling began his legal career in the Litigation Department of the Office of the General Counsel at Sempra Energy. Dietz’s practice encompasses business and civil litigation with a focus on construction litigation and construction disputes.

The vast leftwing conspiracy, also known as the California Coastal Commission, sued the U.S. Navy and developer Douglas Manchester late last month to stop the proposed expansion of a 16-acre naval complex, warning the project has experienced substantial change since the commission approved it more than 20 years ago, and that the plan may now violate the California Coastal Act of 1976. This unholy alliance of enviros, labor leaders and other fear mongers is chiefly why it has taken 20 years to do anything on the site. San Diego Cooley LLP attorneys working for Manchester include: Steve Strauss, Summer Wynn, and Catherine O’Connor.

Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced the addition of Erwin Cena to the firm’s San Diego office. Cena joins the firm as an associate on the Patent Litigation Team in the highly-regarded intellectual property department. Cena focuses his practice on patent litigation, and he has experience in the areas of commercial litigation, products liability and construction defect matters. Before launching his legal career, Cena was employed by Hewlett-Packard where he was involved in the research and development of manufacturing processes for large-format inkjet printer cartridges. He also served in the United States Navy.

Solomon Ward Seidenwurm & Smith, elected Michael C. Cato a partner of the firm. Cato has practiced real estate and finance law in San Diego for more than a decade.

Cato represents local and national real estate owners, developers and investors. He specializes in office, industrial, retail and multifamily projects. Prior to joining Solomon Ward as Of Counsel in 2011, Cato worked nine years with Latham & Watkins and Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton.

“I am very excited,” Cato said. “Solomon Ward, we are more than a great group of lawyers — we are entrepreneurs who strive to understand our clients’ businesses and to deliver excellent legal services with significant value.” Cato is active in the San Diego Chapter of NAIOP, Commercial Real Estate Development Association.

Randy C. Frisch is the president and publisher of the San Diego Business Journal. He is licensed to practice law in California, Nevada and Idaho. He can be reached at rfrisch@sdbj.com.
