Volunteers Raise $300K Walking Off Thanksgiving Day Turkey

Father Joe’s Villages 12th annual Thanksgiving Day 5Krun/walk fundraiser drew more than 8,000 people. Presented by Wells Fargo, the event organizers reported a net of about $300,000 toward the outreach programs Father Joe’s makes to those in need in the San Diego community.

“Proceeds from the Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving Day 5K represent a critical source of support for this organization’s programs,” said Sister Patricia “Tricia” Cruise, president and CEO. “These are programs that help homeless individuals regain their self-sufficiency — from children and families to adults and military veterans. Each registration truly is an investment in the future of San Diego.”

Post-race event offerings included free Stone Brewery beer, the Bill Magee Blues Band and homemade pies from the students of St. Vincent de Paul Village’s culinary arts program. To learn more about Father Joe’s programs, visit www.neighbor.org.

Senior Community Centers recently hosted its annual Thanksgiving meal for hundreds of local seniors at its Fourth and Beech streets location downtown. Volunteers served more than 300 seniors a Thanksgiving meal on fine china with linen tablecloths, as well as holiday music and entertainment. The volunteers included families, service organizations and board members, including students from King Chavez Community High School. The Centers’ research reports that two in five San Diego seniors have to choose between rent and food. The nonprofit helps seniors struggling with poverty and hunger with an overarching goal to keep them independent. Volunteers are needed during the holidays and throughout the year. St. Paul’s Senior Homes and Services is assisted each year by volunteers from Love Uniting Volunteers, known as LUV, who buy holiday gift bags for all residents and participants in St. Paul’s communities. For many of the resident seniors, this is the only gift they will receive during the holiday season. As St. Paul’s has grown, so has the number of gift bags required — 700 are needed this season. Thanks to Ohr Shalom Synagogue, Hanukkah gift bags will be donated to residents of Jewish faith. Last year a Manor resident said, “So many of us don’t have families here, and it’s so nice to receive something on Christmas morning. It’s very comforting and makes one feel LUV’d and appreciated.” To donate, visit www.stpaulseniors.org/giving.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s office in San Diego reports that the two-day fundraiser held recently drew about 1,800 cyclists who helped raise a little more than $1.8 million in donations for MS research and programs, and services for people affected by MS. Information about Bike MS in 2014 will be available at www.biketofinishms.com.

San Diego County Credit Union was a sponsor of the 31st annual Home of Guiding Hands Golf Classic Pro-Am Tournament, a fundraiser that generated more than $45,000 in donations for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The tournament, held recently at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon, featured 27 teams of amateurs playing with a PGA professional. Home of Guiding Hands provides services, training and advocacy to about 800 adults and children with disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and autism.
