New Scenic Walkway Planned at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

The California Coastal Commission is reviewing plans by University of California, San Diego for a new scenic walkway and vista point on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus in La Jolla.

Plans call for a 400-foot-long, six-foot-wide public walkway with a central vista point and related landscaping, between existing and planned public viewing areas, according to a Coastal Commission staff report.

The commission is scheduled to review the project at its Dec. 12 meeting in San Francisco. Coastal Commission staff has recommended conditional approval.

The project site is located along the top of a coastal canyon on the western side of Biological Grade on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. Biological Grade is an existing paved road on the east side of the project site that services Scripps support facilities and the Martin Johnson House, a popular venue for weddings and events.

The new vista point project is deemed key to filling a significant gap in UC San Diego’s campuswide network of public trails, the staff report said.
