Xifin Inc., a San Diego-based company that helps medical labs and physicians with their billing, has acquired Irvine-based PathCentral Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

PathCentral gives pathologists tools to increase revenue, improve operating efficiencies, and ensure patient safety with its cloud-based pathology diagnostics lab. Its software has been gaining traction in the pathology market, Xifin said, with a membership that includes Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts General Hospital, and University of Southern California.

Xifin, a privately held company, was founded in 1997. As of March, it employed 163 and showed 65 percent growth between 2010 and 2012.
