San Diego County Credit Union, the area’s largest credit union with $6.2 billion in total assets, reported second quarter net income of $22.8 million.

The credit union said its customer base grew 5.3 percent over the 12 months to more than 247,000.

That growth is nearly four times above the annualized national average for all credit unions in the nation, based on a first quarter growth estimate from the credit union trade industry organization, SDCCU said.

During the first half, SDCCU opened two new branches in Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos to bring its total network to 31.

It also launched an Internet branch that includes an account dashboard and online bill pay services, as well as a smartphone app allowing users to more easily pay credit card bills.
