Life Technologies Corp. has partnered with Munster, Germany-based Ridom GmbH to develop new software for the company’s Ion Torrent genetic sequencing equipment.

This follows on the heels of the announcement that Life Technologies has been acquired by Waltham, Mass.-based Thermo Fisher Scientific for $13.6 billion — a deal driven in part by the latter company’s interest in Ion Torrent technology.

The Ion Torrent software will allow scientists to quickly determine bacteria varieties based on their genetic information.
