San Diego-based Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. announced that its Micro Systems business received a U.S. Navy contract — specifically a $4.6 million deal from the U.S. Navy Aerial Target and Decoy System program office in Maryland.

The deal calls for Micro Systems to develop a new wideband and high data rate radio upgrade, to be integrated into the System for Naval Target Control.

The target control system, aka SNTC, is the brains for directing pilotless target drones. It can direct up to four aerial targets simultaneously, according to information published by the Navy program office.

Kratos said the recent award represents the first phase of a planned three-phase upgrade effort. Full-rate production will be handled in a separate contract, Kratos said.

Micro Systems Inc. has its headquarters in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. It is part of the Herley Industries, which in turn is part of Kratos.
