Wal-Mart Set to Open in Lower 48’s Southwest Corner

After nine months of construction, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is opening a 76,000-square-foot store today at 575 Saturn Blvd. in the Egger Highlands community.

Store Manager Rick Balke is cutting the ribbon during a brief grand-opening ceremony before the doors open to the public at 8 a.m. Regular store hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

“I am pleased to see an anchor tenant move into this building that has been vacant for several years,” said San Diego Councilman David Alvarez of the building previously occupied by a Mervyn’s store. “I believe having a successful business here will assist in the economic rejuvenation of the community and will help serve the residents’ retail needs.”

The new Wal-Mart will offer a full line of groceries including fresh produce, general merchandise such as apparel and beauty aids in addition to a garden center, pharmacy and digital-photo processing center. The store brings about 200 jobs to the area.

Wal-Mart and the Wal-Mart Foundation plan to distribute $57,000 in donations during the grand-opening event to include two $25,000 grants to Casa Familiar and San Diego Workforce Partnership. The remaining $7,000 will be distributed to the Boys and Girls Club of South County, Emory Elementary School, Montgomery High School Mariachi, Mar Vista NJROTC, San Diego Public Library Foundation for the Otay Mesa-Nestor branch, Imperial Beach Senior Center and South Bay Union School District – VIP Village Preschool.
