JH Cohn LLP, a national accounting firm based in New Jersey and with an office in San Diego, is merging with the Reznick Group PC, a firm based in Bethesda, Md., the firms said May 22.

Once the merger is completed, expected by the end of September, the combined firm would become the 11th largest in the nation with 25 offices and combined annual revenue of about $450 million, the companies said.

Because there is no overlap in offices, there will be little consolidation and no closures, said Wade McKnight, managing partner for the local office in the University Towne Center area. That office has about 31 staffers including 26 accounting professionals, according to the most recent Business Journal research.

“We’re in markets that they desire, and vice versa,” McKnight said. “This will broaden the geographic footprint for both firms.”

Reznick has offices in Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Washington, D.C.; and Chicago, among other cities, while Cohn is largely based in the East Coast including offices in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Cohn was said to have a diverse client base across a wide array of industries. Reznick has a deep knowledge of the affordable housing, commercial real estate industries and tax credit arena, the companies said.

One thing that hasn’t been settled is the firm’s new name, but it may include elements of both companies, McKnight said.
