Delux Dogs Opens on Orange Avenue

By Brad Graves Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Delux Dogs is done operating in stealth mode. So says James McGee, who with co-owner Kirsten Bertz recently set up the eatery in the 900 block of Orange Avenue. Central to the menu are hot dogs on Bread and Cie rolls piled high with condiments.

Delux Dogs occupies the 840-square-foot space formerly home to Stretch’s Cafe, with a dining room only 11 feet wide. The partners gave the place a modern look with a retro touch — 1970s globe lamps — and a mirrored wall to give the illusion of depth. Work involved digging trenches for new electrical conduits and plumbing; bringing the bathroom into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act also took some doing. How much did the owners invest? “More than we thought it would be,” McGee said. “I can tell you this: My 401(k) is gone.”
