A Starbucks in Coronado is among four to six locations where the coffee purveyor has applied for a liquor license, in order to sell beer and wine, a company spokesman confirmed March 14.
Zack Hutson said the Seattle-based Starbucks Corp. has applied with state licensing boards to sell beer and wine at select locations in Southern California, Atlanta and Chicago. That includes its café on Orange Avenue in Coronado.
Starbucks is conducting a gradual roll-out of a limited program already in effect in Seattle and Portland, Ore. Beer and wine offerings will be based on the local tastes of each market.
“The concept is to create a new occasion later in the day to visit the store,” Hutson said.
Beer and wine selections in the Northwest are available with premium food items, including hot flatbreads. Five stores in the Seattle area and one in Portland currently serve the new offerings.
Late last year, Starbucks announced plans to bring the concept to five to seven locations in the Chicago area by the end of 2012. Atlanta and Southern California will each see the items in four to six stores, also by year’s end.
