A groundbreaking was held recently for a $41 million replacement of the Nordahl Road overpass on state Route 78.
The project will allow the freeway to be widened near the Escondido-San Marcos city limits, as well as adding an auxiliary lane leading to Nordahl Road, according to the California Department of Transportation.
The project was funded by a mix of local, state and federal money. San Diego Association of Governments, the regional planning agency, provided $15.5 million to the project, and CalTrans paid $14.1 million. The City of San Marcos allocated $6.75 million and the City of Escondido gave $4.75 million.
The bridge work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2012, while the eastbound auxiliary lane should be done by early 2013, Sandag said.
