Mayor Goes on Offensive Against Sequestration

The prospect of federal spending cuts is triggering alarm at home and around the country.

Mayor Jerry Sanders recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to speak out against “sequestration,” a 10-year program of spending cuts scheduled to take effect in January if Congress does not act.

Sanders said 10 percent budget cuts could not only play havoc with San Diego’s defense economy, but will touch other economic drivers. The region would suffer with cuts to university research, border inspections and agricultural inspections, he said.

Some 225,000 California jobs are at risk, Sanders said. Nationally, the number is 2.14 million, said the Aerospace Industries Association, which organized the event where Sanders spoke.

“It’s bad. They’ve got to fix it,” said Larry Blumberg, executive director of the San Diego Military Advisory Council, after that group’s most recent monthly meeting at Naval Base Point Loma.

Blumberg said defense contractors need clarity: specifically, the Office of Management and Budget needs to specify how the Pentagon must make its 10 percent cuts. Blumberg said making items such as personnel exempt from cuts will put more pressure on other areas, such as procurement, ship repair and research.
