Fortune Finds Enviable Environments at Qualcomm, Scripps Health

Monday, January 23, 2012

Two of San Diego’s largest employers— Qualcomm Inc. and Scripps Health — have landed a spot on Fortune magazine’s annual list of America’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

Qualcomm ranked No. 23 and Scripps Health ranked No. 56.

The list will appear in the Feb. 6 issue of Fortune.

“It is our honor to be recognized by Fortune magazine for the 14th consecutive year,” said Dan Sullivan, executive vice president of human resources at Qualcomm. “Qualcomm continues to value our employees, not only as partners in success, but also as the very engine that drives that success.”

In the online version of the list, which is already published, Fortune applauded Qualcomm, saying the “mobile-telecom firm has long been known for a culture that fosters innovation and encourages diversity; it also boasts a perk-filled campus with one of the most extensive recreational facilities on our list.”

For Scripps, this is its fifth time on the list. “Since 2007, the health care provider has paid out $26.7 million in yearly employee bonuses pegged to increases in patient satisfaction,” Fortune said.

“This accomplishment reflects the importance we place on our employees and how we strive to create a culture of excellence that makes them feel secure, appreciated and empowered,” Scripps CEO Chris Van Gorder, said in a statement.

Scripps is the seventh largest employer in San Diego, with 13,830 local employees, according to the San Diego Business Journal Book of Lists. Qualcomm is the ninth largest, with 10,509 local employees.
