Engineering News Record, a publication for design and construction related news, recently named the new Palomar Medical Center in Escondido the 2012 national Best of the Best Health Care Projects.

The publication also named the hospital California’s Best Health Care Project and Best Overall Project.

The three awards were given to Palomar Health, CO Architects and DPR Construction for their work on the medical center.

“These recognitions are a testament to everyone involved in the creation, planning and design of the new hospital — including our board and staff,” Palomar Health President and CEO Michael H. Covert said in a statement. “It represents a unique achievement and the next stage of development in the building of hospitals and the way we care for individuals in such settings.”

The medical center is also eligible to be chosen for the Editor’s Choice award in February when ENR editors will select one project from the national Best of the Best Projects category to receive the award.

The 11-story medical center was completed in August and features a 1.5-acre rolling green roof, wireless access throughout, and day-lighted operating rooms.

Construction on the center took 4 million work hours and the project underwent 40,000 safety inspections, according to a news release.
