2 Local Designers, Builder Honored For New Library

The new East County library building gets the gold for going green. Ramona’s new 21,000-square-foot public library building recently received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit agency that determines the rigid standards for sustainable buildings. The structure won the distinction, second highest that can be awarded, for its energy-efficient design and construction, including three large solar panels that generate 20 percent of the library’s energy needs. Kudos for the honor go to the design-build team of C.W. Driver, Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects and Manuel Oncina Architects, all three based in San Diego. The library is operated by the county’s library system … Carlsbad-based Chuao Chocolatier co-founders Michael and Richard Antonorsi, celebrating their 10th anniversary next year, donated $8,000 to UC San Diego’s 50th anniversary fundraising effort. From October through May, the brothers conducted a “winning wrapper” contest in which 20 specially-enclosed candy bars included a ticket that invited the finder to a private party. Chuao Chocolatier donated 50 cents from the sale of 16,000 bars to UCSD’s “Invent the Future” campaign. The two brothers attended the La Jolla campus before becoming famous for their exotic chocolate confections. Visitors can check ’em out at chuaochocolatier.com … Meanwhile, tourism gets a kick-start in San Diego. A new franchise, EagleRider, has come to a full stop in San Diego. The franchise rents motorcycles to tourists who want to see the sights and sounds of the region and even beyond, including Palm Springs and Phoenix. Franchisee Kameron Amstutz says he rents out bikes used less than 60 to 90 days or that have less than 18,000 miles on the odometer. Steer on over to eaglerider.com for details … Yet another deep discount coupon purveyor, eDrinkit.com, has launched operations, but this one is based here in San Diego. The site signs up bars, clubs and restaurants to provide promotional drink specials, which are then sent to subscribers in email, or accessed through the company’s website, eDrinkit.com. UCSD grad and local entrepreneur Omid Sabet is one of the co-founders … How ’bout some entertaining news? Ravi Shankar, made famous with raves from The Beatles in the late 1960s for his exotic sitar skills, performs Oct. 9 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Details and ducats available at artcenter.org … Finally! The region’s residents have been invited to attend a forward-looking “civic engagement,” which has been titled, “Our Greater San Diego Vision.” If interested, browse on over to ShowYourLoveSD.org to register for a series of public workshops and other gatherings to be held Sept. 13-15 in Bonita, Escondido, Oceanside, San Diego and Santee. Till next week.
