Contributions Show Commitment to SDSU, Educational Opportunities

San Diego State University kicked off its first ever comprehensive fundraising campaign by announcing $1.6 million in new gifts. President Elliot Hirshman and his wife Jeri led by example with a $100,000 contribution. The campaign will help students from diverse backgrounds, those with financial challenges and students with special artistic, academic or athletic gifts. Other gifts came from Charles and Chinyeh Hostler, Steve Cushman, Irwin Zahn and Sharp HealthCare. Funding raised by the university will also help attract and retain top faculty, support innovation programs, and assist students through scholarships … The Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego chapter is set to present the 39th Annual National Philanthropy Day Awards at a luncheon Nov. 1 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. This year’s honorees are: Mary Herron, Outstanding Organizational Volunteer; Penny Dokmo, Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer; San Diego Social Venture Partners, Outstanding Philanthropic Organization; Vons, Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation; AJ Machado, Outstanding Celebrity Philanthropist; Virginia Napierskie, Outstanding Philanthropist; Armando Herrera, Outstanding Youth Volunteer; and Carole Fish, Outstanding Development Professional. The event recognizes the accomplishments of the culture of philanthropy … United Way announced its award winners for community leadership and volunteerism during its annual campaign kickoff Sept. 20 at Liberty Station. The 2nd annual James F. Mulvaney Community Leadership Award was presented to Judy McDonald for her leadership and philanthropic expertise. McDonald has worked to confront civic inequities, raise community awareness and secure adequate funding for programs that have dramatically impacted the educational landscape. Harold Johnson, president of Procurement Concepts, was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Naish Award which is presented to an individual who has made a significant and sustained contribution to United Way over the years as a volunteer. Johnson has served as a volunteer for over 10 years, donating his time and expertise to improve our community … Jeffrey Strauss, owner of Pamplemousse Grille, held a fundraising dinner at his home for supporters of Casa de Amparo on Sept. 30. The event was a prelude to the Crystal Ball gala which is to be held Oct. 29 at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club and all proceeds will go to benefit Casa Kids Campus … Cali Bamboo donated $50,000 to the Surfrider Foundation at the Celebrity Expressions Session. “Our donation will go toward Surfrider’s Ocean Friendly Garden’s campaign and will support their basic educational classes, hands on workshops and Garden Assistance Program,” said Jeff Goldberg, CEO and president of Cali Bamboo … Superfrog XXXIII presented by Act of Valor on Sept. 11raised $42,000 for Navy SEAL Foundation. The event featured a performance by the Navy Parachute Team Leap Frogs. Sponsors included Act of Valor, SAIC, Pechanga, Matuse and Bandito Bros. … Employees of Takeda Pharmaceuticals drug discovery research sites in San Diego and San Francisco led Takeda Dog Walks to Increase Breast Cancer Awareness. Collectively they raised $20,000 for their local affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The walks complement Takeda’s research efforts to cure cancer in partnership with Millennium, The Takeda Oncology Co. … The San Diego legal community held its 4th Annual Couture for a Cause on Oct. 7 at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The event raised $30,000 to benefit Voices for Children’s programs and STAR/PAL’s programs. The show featured 16 models from the legal community who wore clothes from Tommy Bahama.
