Nassco Working on $100M Ship Repair ProjectTuesday, July 26, 2011
Nassco/General Dynamics Corp. said it expects to complete $100 million worth of renovation and modernization work to the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry by mid-2012.
The Barrio Logan shipyard reported July 25 that it received $24.4 million in contract modifications from the U.S. Navy. Such contracts typically arrive in increments, and the shipyard expects more incremental funding, said spokesman Jim Gill.
Work began in June. The ship will be transferred to Nassco’s dry dock in August, Gill said.
Nassco’s ship repair organization has 750 employees.
The Harpers Ferry was first deployed in 1995. The ship supports amphibious landings by carrying hundreds of U.S. Marines, their landing craft, helicopters and cargo.
