Life Technologies Opens Distribution Hub in India

Carlsbad-based Life Technologies Corp. said July 11 that it has launched a regional distribution hub in India to supply its biotech tools to the rapidly growing scientific community in South Asia.

“By locating the India distribution center in Bangalore, we can bring our innovative technologies more efficiently to our customers and partners in the region and help advance their science,” Devashish Ohri, managing director of Life Technologies South Asia, said in a company statement.

The 25,000-square-foot center, which opened a few weeks ago, will supply a range of products to locations throughout India, a spokesman said. Since the center opened, the volume of items shipped per day in the region has increased fourfold and order filling time has dropped dramatically, the company said.

Life Technologies has done business in India since 2005, with offices based in Bangalore. The company operates there under the name Invitrogen Bioservices India Pvt. Ltd.

In February, Life opened a similar regional distribution hub in Singapore to better serve customers in the Asia Pacific regions of India, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Life ranks No. 3 on the San Diego Business Journal’s list of Largest Public Companies, with revenues of $3.6 billion in 2010. The company’s shares, which trade on Nasdaq under the symbol LIFE, were at $50.46 on July 11 at midday, down 1.6 percent from the previous trading day’s closing price.
