Sempra Makes Pact to Supply Wind Energy

Sempra Generation, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, said April 7 that it has inked a 20-year contract to sell 21 megawatts of wind energy to Maui Electric Co. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The energy will come from the planned $140 million Auwahi Wind plant on a ranch in southeastern Maui.

Sempra Generation said it expects to begin construction on the wind farm at the start of 2012, and it may begin operations by the end of that year. Sempra bought the project from Royal Dutch Shell in October 2009 for an undisclosed price.

San Diego-based Sempra said the project is now undergoing “extensive environmental review” by county, state and federal agencies. In addition, the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission must approve the utility’s contract with Sempra.

The wind plant is expected to generate enough electricity to power 10,000 typical Maui homes. It will also include a battery storage unit able to store as much as 12 megawatt hours of wind energy.

Nights and mornings are the windy periods on the island; power stored in the batteries “will help to regulate and smooth intermittent wind power, providing a valuable source of grid stability for Maui Electric,” Sempra Generation said in a statement.
