ViaSat Inc., the Carlsbad-based maker of satellite equipment, said Sept. 27 that the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command has placed an additional order for tactical radio system terminals valued at $5.5 million.
The new order covers the terminal equipment to be used by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and a foreign military sale to Australia, according to ViaSat.
Last week, JetBlue Airways and ViaSat entered into an agreement to supply the discount airline with next-generation Internet services. The service would use satellite transmissions from ViaSat1, a $400 million satellite the company plans to launch next year.
The deal would develop an on-board Internet service with much faster broadband capacity than is currently available on JetBlue aircraft. The companies said they expect the first systems to be installed in jets by mid-2012.
