Landings at Lindbergh an Extreme Sport

The popular History Channel ranked the 10 “most extreme” commercial airports recently, and the San Diego International Airport, aka Lindbergh Field, touched down at No. 10. As most of us frequent fliers know, the lone runway is the busiest in the nation with 500 departures and landings per day. It is only one of two domestic airports on the History Channel’s list — the other eight extreme airports are located overseas. The No. 1 extreme landing strip is the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Nepal, which offers spectacular, if not scary, views of the Himalayas on departure and arrival. San Diego just offers frighteningly close-up views of downtown San Diego’s various high-rises on downhill approach. The History Channel’s recent program on the world’s 10 extreme airports is available on DVD … Veteran Sacramento Bee political columnist Dan Walters is reporting that U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, who serves North County’s 49th congressional district, is stepping into a make-or-break position when he assumes the chair of the House Oversight Committee in the new Congress. Issa wants to make life difficult for President Obama, promising to schedule dozens of hearings into the mismanagement of various federal agencies to keep pressure on the White House. Success or failure in this role determines whether Issa, who made his mark and his millions in the car alarm business, takes a run at Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat in 2012 … Fast-growing Oceanhouse Media announces the release of “The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks” digital book for the iPad, iPhone and iPod. This is the 10th Berenstain Bears digital book release by the Encinitas-based firm since September. … The La Jolla Playhouse continues its run of “Ruined” through Dec. 19 on the UC San Diego campus. Playwright Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, set in a rural whorehouse in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is not for the faint of heart. It demands a lot from the audience, because it focuses on the insane violence that has beset this African nation for five decades. The Playhouse is donating a portion of its proceeds from the Nov. 28, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 shows to the Alliance for African Assistance, the Women’s International Center. Tickets at lajollaplayhouse.org … And speaking of theater, San Diego’s longest-running professional theater production is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with Teatro Mascara Magica’s staging of “La Pastorela de Libertad.” Brought to Mexico from Spain 450 years ago, the pastorela is the tale of the shepherd’s journey to Bethlehem to participate in the first Christmas. More than 2,500 versions of the story have been developed over the centuries for the stage. This version runs Dec. 9-19 at the Lyceum Theater in Horton Plaza. For tickets, call 619-544-1000.
