UC San Diego Plans $269M Addition to Medical Campus

The University of California Board of Regents has approved the budget for capital improvements and external financing for the Clinical and Translational Research Institute building, to be constructed on the medical campus of UC San Diego in La Jolla.

The board took the action Nov. 16.

According to a Nov. 18 press announcement from UCSD, the projected cost of the project is $269 million, which will be primarily paid for with external funding sources rather than state dollars.

The CTRI building will be in close proximity to Thornton Hospital, Moores Cancer Center, the soon-to-open Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and the recently announced Jacobs Medical Center.

“The CTRI building will create a unique multidisciplinary environment that brings together laboratory scientists and clinical investigators to understand disease, develop new methods of treatment and translate clinical research results into clinical practice,” said Dr. Gary S. Firestein, professor of medicine and director of the Clinical and Translational Research Institute at UCSD School of Medicine.

The new building is currently slated for completion in late 2016.
