Supervisors Reject Merriam Mountains Housing Project

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has rejected the controversial Merriam Mountains housing development north of Escondido, which includes a proposed 2,630 new homes.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune Web site, Supervisor Ron Roberts cast the deciding vote in a 3-2 decision by supervisors at their March 24 meeting. Roberts said he was concerned about jobs, but contended the latest plans did not adequately address greenhouse-gas and air quality requirements.

Opponents have previously objected to the project over concerns such as traffic, noise and fire safety. The proposed development also included a grocery store, fire station and recreational trails.

The vote came in a second daylong hearing on the project. Supervisors previously voted 2-2 on the development, essentially rejecting it, at a December hearing where Roberts was absent.

A March 23 statement from supervisors said Roberts was evaluating the project in relation to state Assembly Bill 32 and Senate Bill 375, requiring the California Air Resources Board to set regional targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Roberts missed the December supervisor vote on Merriam Mountains so he could attend a CARB hearing discussing the integrity of a key regulatory document, the statement said.
