Robotics Cluster Gets on Its Feet

Robotics and related disciplines will be the focus of the newly formed Southwest Regional Innovation Cluster, according to one of the agencies working to form the group.

The San Diego North Economic Development Council, based in San Marcos, said June 30 that it is forming the cluster. Joining the effort are the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International – San Diego as well as Space and Naval Warfare, or Spawar, Systems Center Pacific. Cal State San Marcos hosted a meeting on the cluster’s formation June 23.

The cluster will focus on robotics interoperability, integration and related computer network technologies.

The cluster intends to support small businesses by providing training, counseling, mentoring, commercialization, technology transfer and other services.

Regional innovation clusters are a U.S. Department of Commerce program being pursued by the Obama administration. The North County-based economic development council noted that President Obama’s fiscal 2011 budget proposal calls for awarding $300 million to such cluster programs.
