County Prepares for Property Auction

The county plans to auction 330 properties Feb. 26. It is the government’s way of collecting some $1.5 million owed in back taxes, said County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister Jan. 19.

Under state law, the tax collector can sell any or all portions of properties that have been in default for five years.

McAllister said the list includes 189 time-shares and 100 unimproved parcels, but the numbers could change as owners pony up what’s owed before the deadline for the bills at 5 p.m. Feb. 25.

Interested bidders can sign up to receive information at the three Treasurer-Tax Collector’s offices in San Diego, San Marcos and El Cajon, or by accessing the Web site at www.sdtreastax.com.

Minimum bids are based on the total amount of back taxes owed, penalties and sales costs. Once payments are made in full, and tax deeds are recorded, successful bidders can take possession.
