Smashburger Bound for San Diego, Seven Locations Planned

Smashburger, a Denver-based fast-casual restaurant, and commercial developer Smash Bros. LLC said Oct. 28 they plan to open seven Smashburger locations in San Diego within the next two years.

Smash Bros. is a partner company of Elkins-Whisenhunt Inc. of San Diego.

“Burgers are the right play for this market,” said principal David Whisenhunt, who has worked with Starbucks, Quiznos and Jamba Juice.

Whisenhunt said that for now, his firm is looking at space in central San Diego County, from Del Mar to National City and from the coast to El Cajon. The stores will take up 1,800 to 2,400 square feet and have outdoor dining, Whisenhunt said.

“We’re looking at some pretty great, triple-A sites,” he said.

The restaurants will offer beer and wine in addition to a menu of what Smashburger calls “better burgers.”
